De grootste uitdaging met motoraccu's is, is dat het niet zo goed is voor een accu als deze langere tijd niet wordt gebruikt. Dit komt doordat een accu zelfontlading heeft en zich langzaam ontlaadt. Als dit ontladen te ver door gaat, bestaat de mogelijkheid dat een accu defect kan gaan. Om dit te voorkomen en te zorgen dat je accu altijd vol is, zijn er zogeheten druppelladers. De meest bekend in Nederland zijn de acculaders van de firma TecMate onder de productrange Optimate. Dergelijke apparaten hebben diverse fasen waarmee ze een accu in de juiste conditie houden. Het is niet zo dat ze altijd de accu helemaal vol houden, maar ze zorgen ervoor dat er een soort van minimale cyclus is van ontladen en laden.
